Speech by president Zardari denying the blame on Pak for the Mumbai attacks, saying the attacks are masterminded by ‘non state forces’ reveals the real state (pathetic) of governance there. Terrorist attacks by the Pak militants known to be trained and supported by ISI are not new for India though.
But, after the latest Mumbai attacks, there seems to a global awakening about the Pak originated terrorism. Is that just because a few foreign nationalities are killed in the attack? I don’t think so. U.S Secretary of State, Rice was in India immediately after the tensions got over, for talks with India and Pakistan on the aftermath of the attacks.
Looks like there are major reasons behind the immediate US response, other than the targeted attack on foreign nationals. One reason could be the Pak announcement on moving their troops from the Afghan border to the Indian border which would make the life difficult for American soldiers in the Afghan and the next could be a fear of war between two nuclear states at a time when the global economy is going south.
Obvious reasons apart, it looks like the west has realized the potential threat for them seeing the power of the ‘non state factors’ operating in a nuclear state! Convincing fact that makes me think that way is again related to the economic and political situation prevailing in Pak at this point in time.
Pak economy has already gone broke and is asking for an IMF bailout, at a time when it is coming out of a considerably lengthy dictatorship. ISI is known to act independently, which at times plays ploy against its own state government. Pak had spent quite considerable amount of money on strengthening its army and intelligence on par (or more) with much bigger countries like India. Being an activist state the ISI surely is expected to have spent a lot of money on encouraging and building the non state forces in addition to the encouragement that comes from the international Jihad activists.
I would say Pak is becoming another Afghan, and there could be a time in the near future where the non state factors might take control with the help of the army. Economic conditions would force the Pak government to cut back on defence spending and the army wouldn't like it, that could be one of the reasons why the army would go with the activists whose first preference for spending would be on the arms and armed personal. And that is going to be a major threat to the entire world. Think of a nuclear state with US funded high-tech arms in the hands of Islamic activists! And the west is starting to realize this after the planned attack on the foreign nationals.
Given a chance to grow at the current phase, Pak will change into an epicenter of mass destruction capable of targeting any place in the world. In a way the current attacks are going to bring lot of long term goods to India; for sure India is going to strength its security forces & intelligence and US is going to force and closely follow up the closure of the activist camps in the Pak boundary. These two things would strength our nation’s security to dramatic levels where there won’t be any (many) bloodshed attacks on the innocent civilians.
