Almost after 10 years, Hon’ble Chief Minister of Tamilnadu Dr. Kalaignar is organizing the World Classical Tamil Conference again, the big way in Coimbatore from 23rd to 27th June.
Does it really matter to organize conferences like these? Yes, of-course; for the same reason as to why Google conducts Google IO or Microsoft conducts TechEd.
Once in a while it is better to come out and conduct conference like this so as to uphold the community, to create publicity, interest, and passion; to demonstrate the greatness and to publically declare the not so commonly known facts. Technology to religion to language, anything that is of a community’s interest should do this, at least to keep the group informed.
Last week I was debating with one of my friends about the root of South Indian languages and we had a disagreement. Neither he nor I was in a position to strongly defend our argument because of the lack of complete knowledge, easily available references (ofcourse Wiki is there, but both of us were not ready to trust Wiki for information regarding a minority of global population). I hope conferences like these in a well connected Web 2.0 world would have much more impact than the previous eight Tamil conferences and would create easily referable information for us. Sorry San – you should wish for a Tulu conference :)
Just reading through one of the pages of the conference website itself was very informative and I am sure the conference would create a lot more public information and public awareness. In my view, social conferences like this should be encouraged and more widely conducted to preserve and uphold the culture and identity of communities. But one thing that needs to be kept in mind while doing all this is the mutual respect for the peer identities and day today public life.
